Flooring Options New Orleans, LA

After the front door, the first thing a person makes physical contact with when entering a home is the floor. It may not be something you look at right away, but you sure would notice if it wasn't there. Even the best laminate flooring doesn't grab a person's attention if done right. When considering a change to your home or building a new home there are five major flooring options to consider.

Hardwood

Hardwood flooring gives a home a both natural and classic feel. It's the flooring you think of when you picture laying on a cozy rug next to a fireplace. It is definitely one of the most expensive options but it often pays for itself with very few drawbacks. Hardwood raises the value of a home and is extremely resistant to all things that happen in a house, like moving furniture, children playing, and long term traffic. The only real setback is that in high moisture situations, the planks have a tendency to bow up. You definitely wouldn't want to use it in a bathroom, and if you live in a moist climate you should definitely check into what can be done to prevent bowing before you decide on hardwood.

Carpet

Carpet is by far the most commonly used of all the flooring options. There are several different types of carpet made of different types of fibers with different color choices. This option can be great if you have small children as it supplies a much safer landing area for a tumbling toddler. Much like hardwood, due to moisture you would not want to use carpet in bathrooms and kitchens. The biggest drawback is how easy it is to stain carpet, however there are options available that are reasonably effective at making carpet stain resistant.

Laminate

Laminate is the most versatile flooring because it can be made to look like any other material. It is not a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms even if the best laminate flooring uses a waterproof seal. Without a sealing agent this flooring will react to moisture just as hardwood does. Wood fibers are woven together to form a surface that a photograph of stone, tile and wood can be photographed and placed on top of the laminate. This means laminate can be anything you want it to be.

Tile

Tile is most commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms due to its waterproof quality. Tile is made of clay that is fired in a kiln and glazed so that you can make any pattern you like. It is also placed in squares, which gives you freedom to rearrange them in any order before setting them for good.

Vinyl

Besides tile, vinyl is the most commonly used flooring for bathrooms and kitchens due to its waterproof quality. Luxury vinyl tile gives you the option of having the floor look just like tile if you so choose.

The vast majority of people use a combination of at least two or three of the above mentioned flooring throughout their home. Having discussed all the major flooring options, we hope this gives you a head start on flooring your home.
